Tonight’s “Research” - Black Roses (1988)

Plot: A satanic hair metal band called Black Roses plays a show in a small town, turning the teens in the town into bloodthirsty demons.

Fun concept/idea, terrible execution. There’s fun “bad 80’s” fare, and then there’s stuff like this. Barely any gore, slow as molasses and absolutely no fun at all. A few of the hair metal songs were awesome, and there’s one funny completely gratuitous boob scene, but overall, not worth my time. I fast forwarded through a lot of it. A bummer because it’s a great premise for a horror flick (and admittedly similar to NOTP).

Fake intestines are drying outside. Not really sure they are doing what I expected or hoped they’d do. I’m not really familiar with using liquid latex. And it’s expensive (I just used an 8oz $15 tube on about 8 feet worth of intestines). This was just an experiment. I think they may turn out OK, once they dry. We shall see.

However, my other FX attempt: to rig an exploding face boil out of the tip of a condom was a big giant fail. The lube makes working with them damn near impossible. Hopefully someone with real FX experience can figure this one out for me.

Shouldn’t be too hard to figure out, right?

Great callbacks / audition session today. Would like to introduce you all to actor Luke Edwards. We’ve gotten lucky and he’s into the project and (barring any unforeseen circumstances) he’s going to play our lead hero. Check out his IMDb and it’s sure to spark some good memories from movies you loved as a kid (if you’re anywhere around my age). Having him in the short kicks everything up a notch. Psyched.

Went to the location with Mike Kershner, our cinematographer, yesterday. Met the owner, squared away the details, let Mike get a sense of the space.

Heading to a makeup test right now with Daniela Richardson, our lead makeup/FX person. Hoping for some cool, creepy looking demons to come out today. I’ll post some shots.

Callbacks tomorrow, and seeing another potential Hooch. Hope someone shines through.
